Background history of friendship between a boy and a marginal , the film shows finesse with the period of adolescence where the gullibility and naivety gave way to disillusionment and disappointment in human nature. With tenderness and delicacy , the director depicts the phase where the child idealizes adults and gives them an almost blind trust before being disappointed and angry about the lies , the manipulation and hypocrisy which he became aware witness .
This is exactly where lies the strength of the film. Jeff Nichols ( director) once again demonstrates his talent to film the tortured psychology of his characters ( as he did in ” Take Shelter ” with her psychotic character , obsessed by the end of the world ) .
To interpret its young characters , he chose two teenagers still unknown, Tye Sheridanand Jacob Lofland , who has never played before, and gave the lead to Matthew McConaughey . The Texan actor, who made his comeback in independent films such as ” The Lincoln Lawyer “, ” Paperboy “, ” Killer Joe “, after a long series of romantic comedies just as disastrous as each other , offers a very good performance in the role of old lone wolf wounded , magnified by the natural scenery the island where the story unfolds .
Without saying too much , ” Mud ” is a beautiful story about the transition from childhood to adulthood , with disillusionment and disappointment , and overall about life and human nature.
